I'm Bailey, a small girl from a small town. I lived a year in Kyoto and I graduated from college in Chicago in June 2010. I am beginning to get to know Boston. I am intent on adventures. I like beautiful things, funny things, photography, Japan, and emoticaps. (I am a vegan in progress and sometimes it happens in public.)

This is from Jamey Ice who is the lead guitarist of Green River Ordinance, a band I really enjoy. He tweeted this morning that the band’s former label, EMI, had removed a music video from YouTube, claiming sole copyright of the song. Even though the band financed the video by arranging a KickStarter account and filmed it long after leaving the label, EMI still blocked it.
I’m speechless. SOPA’s getting personal now…
Gross shit right here.
I’m not sure who this band is, but this is infuriating. Don’t they have any legal recourse?
To my anon: THIS is also how SOPA negatively impacts artists by giving producers all the power.
This…isn’t SOPA, though. SOPA was shelved indefinitely in Congress. (This isn’t to say that it can’t still pass later, tacked onto the end of a fiscal spending bill during years where we have a president who hasn’t already vowed to veto it, but that’s another matter).
The reason why SOPA was so awful and unnecessary was because the recording industry already had this power. They’ve been doing things like this for years.
SOPA was really terrible and something that was worthy of our vigilance, but it’s dangerous to attribute it to the powers that these industries already hold.
